Journal of U.S. Revenue Service assignment to St. Paul's Island, Alaska, 1869 Mar 4-Sep 1.

Bound holograph manuscript journal of a trip from San Francisco to St. Paul's Island, Alaska, on behalf of the United States Treasury. En route to Alaska, Barnes comments on his encounters with, and the activities of, the inhabitants of Sitka and other Alaskan villages. On St. Paul's Island, Barnes describes the seal population; his experiences in enforcing U. S. policy regarding the seal trade; and the conflict between Barnes and Army Lieutenant James L. Mast. Numerous entries contain personal comments addressed to Barnes's wife and children. The journal includes copies in Barnes's hand of orders and correspondence between Barnes, the Treasury Department, and Lieutenant Mast; copies in Russian and English of a request by the natives to extend the number of seals they were allowed to kill; a list in Russian and English of the numbers of seals killed between May 17 and December 15, 1869; and a hand-drawn map of St. Paul's Island. Pasted in the volume are news clippings regarding Alaskan trade laws and the preservation of the fur seal, two poems, and two hand-drawn and colored pictures of seals.
